Welcome to Sundays Child and Friends!

Sundays Child and Friends is an art piece by Susan Lenz. It is part altered poetry, part refashioned dolls, and part technology. The work will be on view for Valentine's Day 2012 at the sixth annual "What's Love Input/Output", one-night only exhibition in 701 Whaley Street's art space. This artwork will be part of the "upstairs" poetry area sponsored by Jasper Magazine, a premier arts publication in Columbia, South Carolina. The theme of the evening is TECHNOLOGY ... so Sundays' Child and Friends is coming into the 21st century through this blog.

Prior to February, each doll was posted individually on this blog, appearing in their "before" garments and with the traditional nursery rhyme line. During the week leading up to Valentine's Day, each doll was revealed on her blog post in her new, risque attire. Likewise, each day included the new, altered poetic phrase.

QR symbols will be featured during the exhibition to bring audience members to the blog posts below. Thus, the "before" photos will be accessible via "smart phones" during the exhibit. This is how the theme of technology was worked into the installation.

BUT FIRST ... Here's a little history of the work in progress!

"We all get NAKED !!!"

In order to have naughty lingerie custom made for a public exhibition, all seven dolls were undressed ...

... and measured (5⅝" x 5" x 6⅜") ...

and their original dresses were put into labeled plastic bags (below).

After all the dolls were newly dressed, the presentation platform was constructed. The title and label information along with the QR codes were printed as an over-sized photocopy. This was mounted on foam-centered board and framed. Below the information, space was left for a framed and mounted mirror. The reverse includes a support system that allows the sign to sit upright, by itself, on a table. (Photo below was taken at Mouse House ... on top of the dry mount machine! Because the one-night-only event is expecting over 1,000 in attendance, it seemed obvious that the dolls needed to be firmly secured to a base. With so many people, undoubtedly the table would be constantly bumped causing the dolls to topple over. Thus, a "red carpet" (okay...it's actually red mat board) runway was constructed. Holes were drilled into the doll stands allowing screws to affix the stand to the runway.

Finally, a composite photograph was created on which the new poem appears!

Hopefully, people will like these dolls enough to purchase them. They'll only be $40 each ... including their stand and former attire!
